In-Season Tournament - New game format of NBA
NBA is eager to make basketball more interesting than ever before. With introducing a new format of game called 'In-Season Tournament', NBA is giving fans to experience more exciting matches and players to showcase their skills and a chance to add numbers to their career stats.
Announcement is official and dates have been released on official NBA website for bookings. So, know all about the new In-Season Tournament and how it can affect the regular season and playoffs with the benefits of participating.
The Reason for Introducing the Tournament -
After the success of WNBA's version of the event, Adam Silver, NBA Commissioner, decided to move the format in NBA. As per officials, they believe that In-Season Tournament games will generate large amount of revenue for the organization. They also thought that the sales of merchandise and match tickets through the event will make team owners to agree with terms. Idea of this format is taken from European Football where most point owned team play a regular-season championship while simultaneously play separate league tournaments. Only difference from European Football Tournament is that all 30 teams will play under NBA league in six five-teams blocks.
Impact on Regular Season Games -
Normally, NBA scheduled 82 games for a regular season to all the teams but this year due to introducing the In-Season Tournament games will be 80. For those who'll go to Las Vegas for semifinal will fill their 82 matches quota and two finalist teams of the tournament will play 83 matches in total. All games are scheduled in month of November and December which is picked to attract more audience during non-basketball season.
Impacts on Playoff -
Although there are rumors of winner of the tournament to get a guaranteed place in playoff, that was ultimately rejected, and officials have decided that results of In-Season Tournament will not affect The Playoff event. Tournament games will be treated as a regular-season game.
Teams of Each group -
In-Season Tournament teams have been selected based on their previous year rankings. 30 teams divided in 6 blocks of 5-teams. All the teams will play two home and two away, total 4 matches. NBA took all 15 teams of both conference and based on their positions put them into 5 pots. So: teams ranked 1-3 in Pot 1, Pot 2 consists of 4 to 6 rankers, ranking 7-9 got the Pot 3, while Pot 4 has 10 -12 rank teams and teams 13 to 15 get in Pot 5.
Group A - Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, Indiana Pacers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons.
Group E - Denver Nuggets, Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, New Orleans Pelicans, LA Clippers.
Group F - Golden State Warriors, Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs, Minnesota Timberwolves, Sacramento Kings.
Format of the In-Season Tournament -
All the teams will play two home and two away, total 4 matches to qualify for quarterfinal. All leading teams from 6 blocks will be participating along with two wildcard entry which will be the teams with 2nd best records in the tournament. And quarterfinal to semifinal and final will be a single match elimination process, so that all the teams put their best players and tactics to won over.
Winning Prizes and Honors -
Tournament is not only attracting teams for ranking, but also money involved as prize. The winners of In-Season Tournament will receive $500,000 each while runners-up will pocket $200,000. Semifinalist loser to get $100,000 and quarterfinal eliminated team will get $50,000 as incentives.
NBA introduced new All NBA Cup for the winners of the event. Also, there are Most valuable Player Award and All-Tournament team Award.
NBA is trying get more viewership and higher TV rights by introducing this brand new and exciting format to the game. But This will put pressure on players to perform well throughout the year, also creates chance to steal the light to increase their value. This is the first time NBA games will be played in Vegas and how will fans accept the chance and will the In- Season Tournament format continue or not, only time will tell.
