"He set the standard for what it was to be a complete player" Yankee star Aaron Judge after receiving the honor

Aaron Judge, the New York Yankees star and a probable Hall of Famer, was awarded the Clemente Award by the MLB before Game 3 of the World Series. He is the fourth Yankee to win this award after Derek Jeter in 2009. This honor is given every year to a player who shows a strong commitment to the community's welfare and understands the importance of helping others.

This award is dedicated to Roberto Clemente, the 1971 World Series MVP. He was the first player from the Caribbean and Latin America to win a World Series and was involved in various charitable works. Unfortunately, the Pittsburgh Pirates HOF died in a plane crash on December 31, 1972, while delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

AP Baseball Writer, Ronald Blum shared the award ceremony moments and Aaron Judge's reaction in his Times Union newsletter.

"He [Roberto Clemente] set the standard for what it was to be a complete player. And that’s something I try to model my game after,” Aaron said.
"The 3,000 hits is impressive, the batting average, the home run numbers. But, honestly, I’m jealous of the Gold Gloves."

Judge received the news from Jason Zillo, the vice president of communications and media relations for the NYY. Zillo informed him that he had won MLB’s Roberto Clemente Award for character, community involvement and philanthropy on October 20.

"It is our highest honor because it represents the combination of on-field excellence and service in our communities," Rob Manfred, baseball Commissioner, commented.

Judge and Manfred were joined by Roberto Clemente Jr. and Luis Clemente, sons of Roberto at a Monday news conference.

Aaron Judge's future with the Yankees:

The 31-year-old Yankee outfielder has signed a 9-year / $360,000,000 deal with the franchise in 2023. Despite having the batting of .267/.406/.617 with 1.019 OPS, Judge didn't qualify for the 2023 playoffs for the first time since 2017.

The Yankees' 2022 MVP is still waiting for his championship ring. He recently had a conversation with team owner Hal Steinbrenner to discuss the necessary steps the team needs to take to reach the World Series for the first time since winning the pennant in 2009.
