End of Bollywood? South Industry on Top? - what's next?
Trend in Film and Fasion is a wave that always washes off the old bays to create space for new and Bollywood is no exception. Starting from Kapoor dynasty to Mr. Mithun and Bacchan times to Era of Khans to Age of always introducing new faces, Bollywood can be traced back to undivided India. There was a saying that border and passion of Cricket might divide India and Pakistan, but emotion of film connects both the neighbors.
Bollywood started late compared to godfather film industry 'Hollywood'. But they caught up pretty quickly with their art of romance, fictional fighting and unique storytelling. But it got global recognition for soulful music and energetic dancing whether it was Mithun's 'Jimmy Jimmy' in Russia or DDLJ of SRK in USA. Those were the deserts that no one want to miss. So why an Industry that huge with global reach now struggling to make headlines?
Bollywood not just any average industry, it is responsible for India's a significant portion of GDP. There was even a time when Bollywood got involves with political mafias. Term 'Bollywood' refers film industry of Bombay, now Mumbai and mainly consist of Hindi speaker, while others regional film counterparts refer themselves as Tollywood. They are too little in size and reputation compared to Bolly-world. But in recent years tides have shifted and Tollywood gaining name in global stages like Academy Awards and more. And the reasons are pretty distinguishable.
You heard 'Rahul' in the middle of street, babyface of SRK will pop in your mind, 'Babu Mosai' said someone, and you got glimpse of Rajesh Khanna, Heard the name 'Prem', vintage Salman incoming and it just a tip of iceberg. There are numerous names, styles and even things that can remind of you them. Although now days it's hard to find any. Not that there aren't actors with such roles, but same actor did too many other roles that it's hard to remember him for one. Versatility is always required skill for any actor, but they shouldn't abandon their specialty in course of search. Once SRK said in an interview that he might be one the last 'Star' of Bollywood right now and it can't be truer that sky of Bollywood is now 'Star'lessly dark.
Experimenting new stories and ideas to know and capture new generation's attention is certainly a part of trending world but too much experiment may leave the audience uninterested further. And it is what Bollywood might be suffering now, Leaving Comedy-Action-Romance-Emotion all-in-one Masala movie, the core of indie films, they started 'era of try and error' starting with autobiography films to suspense, crime and triller movies accompanied by army and patriotic screenplays, it got number of success too but for short period as audience still wants base movies, but in the mist of all chaos south film industry never forget where they came from. While they experiment new genre, they still believe that emotions of billions of viewers drive this industry higher. Just like global-fame director Mr. SS Rajamouli makes film on 'Housefly' and breaks box office with 'Bahubali', he also focuses with 'RRR' to connect with ground people. And this could be a great example for many.
When Sun shines too bright we close our eyes and that could be another thing happening with Bollywood right now. It might become too shiny with its production that people can't relate to it anymore. With new directors casting new faces with green ideas, people can't imagine themselves and feel actors' emotions. A time when people leaving halls in tears or in happy faces was considered the greatest achievement of the actor and casting to shifted on how many digits the films make on paper regards its critics or negative response. Although Tollywood still holds the tradition, cutting foots long poster and fans praying for its success and actors becoming more that just human as Rajnikant in South, all of these now are some old wines to Bollywood.
Fig - The End
So, is that the end of Bollywood? well, Definitely Not. Industry itself realises those problems and working on it and result is visible as in last few films the genre of masala films is getting back in screens as well as in box office collection. This could be sign of revival of Bollywood. And with Tollywood coming close to benchmark of Bollywood, a collab of industries could open new features that will get concern of Hollywood.
