Series a Global Phenomena
‘Manga’ term was unfamiliar
in global dictionary until an ordinary author from Japan, decides to share a
kid and his imaginary friends’ journey to a fantasy land. Nearly three decades later
that kid’s journey is being celebrated on 9th May as ‘Goku Day’.
Akira Toriyama,
Japanese mangaka or comic artist, started his journey in 1978 with ‘Wonder
Island’. He got early fame with his sci-fi comedy series ‘Dr. Slump’
in 1980. He could have stopped there and world might never get introduced to Manga.
But in 1984, he started working on new project that everyone thought was just
another book in library. But Akira knew and believed in his manga and worked hard for its art and unique storyline and character development, then published ‘Dragon
Ball’ in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. And rest got history.
Goku and his friends goes
on adventure to find 7 mysterious ball that can any grant wish. With ups and
downs in the life of Goku, fans connect more and more with him until Japan can’t
hold anymore and the manga got television broadcasting, which called Anime, in
1986.
The stage was set for Goku
to meet more fans around the world. In 81 counties Dragon Ball was broadcasted,
including in India in 2001 with Hindi dubbed version. With following Dragon
ball, sequel of its Dragon Ball Z also got high compliments. In Z series
fans gets new forms, powerful villains and even time travelling as an arc. The brilliance
of Akira exceeding every hypothesis of fans. Imaginary forms and characters
were drawn by fans as an appreciation to the mangaka. Fans expecting more and
more, but every good thing comes an end. With Dragon Ball Grand Tour (GT), they bid farewell to Son Goku.
Fans were sad but not more than producers and editors. Demands of bring back the series were getting louder
and louder. Even with few movies release it just cools the fire, not the
volcano. And Akira didn’t disappoint his fan’s expectation. When trend was in control
of Big 3, i.e. Naruto. Bleach and One Piece, the Legend enters. GT become
non-canon and Goku continues his journey in Dragon Ball Super series.
Fans get universal level story this time with visuals and soundtracks still
excites fans. Becoming winner in Tournament of Power, Son Goku closes his
journey in anime. But in manga DB Super continues and fans are eagerly waiting
for the Season 2.
Akira inspires a generation of mangaka with the hope to become a global icon with comic work. Masashi Kishimoto, author of Naruto; Eiichiro Oda, mangaka of One Piece; Comic artist of Berserk, Late Kentaro Miura, all of them appreciates work of Toriyama.
With Bandai promoting PC and Mobiles games on DB and films released globally directly on cinema hall, Goku become a Global Legend in fantasy world and his journey become legacy which fans celebrated on 9th May as Goku Day. What Akira has stored in his mind and what will be this global sensation’s final journey, only time will tell.
